What is Reflexology. History

SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST A FOOT MASSAGE!!!!

REFLEXOLOGY dates back as far as Egyptian times, when carvings were found inside the tomb of Ankmahor, a famous Egyptian figure, illustrating people giving some form of hand and foot treatment to each other. Fast-forward to 1930 when a physiotherapist named “Eunice Ingman” pioneered the use of reflex techniques on both the feet and hands. She initially called this compression massage and then finally “Reflexology”. In 1978 it was “Doreen Bayly” who after training with Eunice Ingman brought Reflexology to London, where she opened the first ever school of it's kind “The Bayly School of Reflexology” which is still going today.

Reflexology is a non- invasive complimentary therapy that is based on the theory that the body is mapped on the feet in a series of reflex points that correspond to organs, glands and the musculoskeletal system. Pressure and stimulation of these reflexes sends a stimulus to the central nervous system and a response is generated aiding the body to regain its natural state of balance otherwise known as (homeostasis). With over 7,000 nerve endings per foot, reflexology has discovered that our feet are a powerful connection to our body's innate ability to heal itself. But, how exactly does this ancient modality work.

REFLEXOLOGY activates the relaxation response. The relaxation response is the state in which the body no longer perceives danger, so that the blood pressure, heart rate, digestive functioning and hormone levels return to their normal state, thus bringing the body into balance.

REFLEXOLOGY improves circulation. Stress compromises our circulation in 2 different ways. Firstly by diverting blood from the stomach, gut and bladder to accommodate the flight or fight response. Secondly by tightening up the muscles around the body, thus constricting the blood flow. Reflexology's powerful relaxation benefit is a great counterbalance to the challenges that stress poses to our bodies.

REFLEXOLOGY encourages the body to cleanse of toxins and impurities that build up. The body has its own amazing built-in cleaning systems, such as the liver, the lymphatic system and the excretory system. The function of these systems can be impeded if stress interferes causing toxins and waste to build up, instead of being processed as nature intended. By activating the relaxation response, the circulation to the detoxification organs and systems is improved, thereby boosting their function to optimal level.

REFLEXOLOGY opens up our energy pathways by removing stagnant energy our energy is able to flow freely. This theory is supported by the fact that six Chinese meridians that are used in acupuncture are also found on the feet and are clearly tapped into during a reflexology session.

REFLEXOLOGY supports the immune system. It is now known that stress, fatigue and diet, (to name a few) all suppress this key system in keeping us healthy. Therefore, when the body is relaxed and is given a detoxification boost, the immune system is able to operate in full force to protect the body from illness and exposure to environmental pollutants.

REFLEXOLOGY is also suitable for babies and children. It can really beneficial if your child suffers from anxiety related issues and I have seen some great results which is extremely rewarding.

FAQ'S AND ANSWERS:

Q. DOES REFLEXOLOGY HURT....

A.... Everyone is different, therefore I will use the amount of pressure according to each individual client. I find some clients enjoy a strong treatment and are not afraid of a bit of discomfort, whereas others are more sensitive so I know that I need to ease off and be more gentle. I always make sure to check my client is happy throughout the session.

Q. DOES IT TICKLE....

A.... No the pressure used is firm but pleasant.. Even my daughter who has the tickliest of feet was pleasantly surprised at how much she enjoyed it and continues to reap the benefits from weekly treatments.

Q. CAN I HAVE A TREATMENT IF I HAVE A VERRUCA...

A – Yes, we can cover the verruca with a plaster to avoid cross infection and I will work that reflex point on the hand instead. At the same time, you should see a chiropodist for treatment to clear up the infection.

Q. HOW WILL I FEEL AFTER A TREATMENT....

A -Most clients feel extremely relaxed and at the same time energised after their treatment, and experience a deep refreshing sleep that night. You may also feel thirsty immediately after and it is always recommend that you drink a lot of water post treatment to help flush out toxins. The following day you may experience what is known as a “primary response”, this is a completely normal and temporary response, it is your body’s way of telling you the self-healing process has begun. These responses may include an increase in perspiration, more frequent urination, strong smelling urine, or a headache. These are signs that the toxins are working their way out of your body. Any side-effects should be short-lived, but it is important that you let me know about them at the next session so that I can further adapt the treatment plan if necessary.

Q. HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

A – Everyone is different and the number of treatments depends on a whole host of factors; the condition that you would like help with, your age and general state of health. As a general rule your therapist will advise a session of 6 -8 weekly treatments, when the initial course comes to an end you will be able to discuss with your therapist whether you wish to continue in the same fashion, or gradually lessen the frequency of your treatments to once every 2 weeks and then once a month etc. If you are having reflexology purely for relaxation purposes, then treatments do not need to be as frequent, but can be booked whenever you feel that they are necessary.

Q. WHEN WILL I NOTICE THE BENEFITS?

A – This varies; some people don’t notice any improvements until treatment 4 or 5. Other people notice the benefits almost immediately. Most people find they are more relaxed after treatments and sleep very well for one or two nights after the treatment. As you become more relaxed your body has a chance to rest and repair. Also, by following the after care advice and doing the best you can for yourself, the benefits should be greater.
